Immersive Local Stay in Otaru, Hokkaido 6 days

Meeting Point: Haneda Airport or Shin-Chitose Airport

Finish Point: Haneda Airport or Shin-Chitose Airport

Recommended Season: May to October

Duration: 6 days

As part of our distinguished “Immersive Local Stay” series—where guests experience one Japanese town in depth through extended, residential-style sojourns—we have selected Otaru in Hokkaido, a remarkable port town whose heritage stretches back to the Jomon period. This historic settlement flourished as a bountiful fishing ground, achieving particular prominence during the pre-modern era when the Kitamae trading ships transported herring to Osaka. The town’s prosperity is reflected in the magnificent herring mansions that still grace the landscape, testament to an era of remarkable affluence. Even after the decline of traditional shipping routes due to the advent of steamships, Otaru continued to prosper as Sapporo’s principal port. During the Taisho period, the town’s financial sector flourished to such an extent that it earned the prestigious sobriquet “Wall Street of the North”. Today, the town’s historical architecture remains wonderfully preserved, creating atmospheric streetscapes that evoke a profound sense of nostalgia. The surrounding region offers additional attractions, including the Shakotan Peninsula and Yoichi district. We have crafted this exclusive six-day sojourn to allow our distinguished guests to fully appreciate the refined pleasures of Hokkaido at a leisurely pace.

Ancient Otaru: The Enigmatic Rock Art of Fugoppe Cave

Nestled between Yoichi and Otaru on the Shakotan Peninsula lies a remarkable concentration of mystifying archaeological sites that continue to intrigue scholars to this day. The most notable among these is the extraordinary Fugoppe Cave, discovered in 1950, which houses an extensive collection of prehistoric rock engravings. This magnificent cave, measuring 7 metres in depth and width, with a height of 5 metres, presents approximately 800 meticulously carved figures across its southern, northern, and inner walls, offering visitors a rare glimpse into ancient spiritual practices. These fascinating petroglyphs depict an array of intriguing figures: winged humanoids thought to represent flying shamans, beings adorned with horns and tails presumed to be shamans in animal disguise, various fauna, and maritime scenes showing figures in vessels. The presence of figures holding musical instruments suggests that this sacred space once resonated with diverse ceremonial rituals, making it an exceptional testament to the sophisticated spiritual life of ancient Japan’s indigenous inhabitants.

Medieval Otaru: A Journey Through the Opulent Legacy of the Herring Trade

From the Edo period through to the early Showa era, the Shakotan Peninsula flourished as one of Hokkaido’s premier herring fishing grounds, dotted with numerous fishing outposts that created a vibrant maritime community. The herring harvested from these bountiful waters were transported via Kitamae trading vessels to distant markets in Wakasa, Osaka, and the imperial capital of Kyoto, generating extraordinary wealth for the region. While the herring fishing industry declined precipitously after the Showa period, the magnificent herring mansions—known as Nishin Goten—still stand as elegant testimonies to this golden age, scattered throughout the Shakotan region. We invite our distinguished guests to experience this remarkable heritage through visits to the historic Fukuhara fishing grounds in Yoichi and the impressive Nishin Goten Tomari in Tomari Village, which ranks among Hokkaido’s most splendid examples of these mercantile estates.

Modern Otaru: The Art Village – A Cultural Renaissance in Early 20th Century Architecture

From the Meiji period onwards, Otaru flourished as Hokkaido’s maritime gateway, and through to the early Showa era, the establishment of financial institutions, shipping companies, and trading houses transformed this port city into a pivotal economic centre that laid the foundation for Hokkaido’s development. Today, the Otaru Art Village stands as a testament to this prosperous era, masterfully repurposing five magnificent buildings constructed during Otaru’s golden age at the dawn of the 20th century: the former Arata Trading Company, the historic Takahashi Warehouse, the erstwhile Mitsui Bank Otaru Branch, the former Hokkaido Takushoku Bank Otaru Branch, and the distinguished Naniwaya Warehouse. This architectural ensemble now houses the prestigious Nitori Group’s art collection, creating a harmonious blend of historical grandeur and contemporary cultural significance.
