Message from Tour Planner
The Izu Seven Islands including Oshima and Hachijojima, along with the Ogasawara Islands, are collectively known as the Tokyo Islands and are attracting renewed attention. Following our already well-received Ogasawara tours, we present this journey visiting Hachijojima and Miyakejima together. Despite their proximity, Hachijojima and Miyakejima reveal completely different landscapes. Hachijojima, formed by two mountains—Mount Mihara and Mount Hachijo-Fuji—is a verdant green island known for ancient settlements with stone walls and the traditional craft “Ki-Hachijo.” In contrast, Miyakejima is a volcanic island covered in black lava plateaus. The “Volcanic Experience Walking Trail” traversing lava terrain reveals the dramatic and varied landscapes created by magnificent volcanic forces. You will surely be amazed that such islands exist so close to the metropolitan area.
Recommended Program
Outbound Flight, Return Journey by Large Passenger Ship
For the outbound journey to Hachijojima, we use aircraft as ship travel would require an overnight voyage, whilst the return journey offers a brief but enjoyable sea voyage. We utilise Tokai Kisen’s regular large passenger ship “Tachibana-maru.” The ship features an onboard restaurant where you can enjoy light meals and beverages. The journey from Hachijojima to Miyakejima takes approximately 4 hours, offering views of Mikurajima’s port scenery—a rare visiting opportunity (no disembarkation). The following day’s journey from Miyakejima to Tokyo’s Takeshiba Pier takes approximately 6 hours. Weather permitting, enjoy views of the Izu Seven Islands, followed by the Boso Peninsula and Miura Peninsula as we enter Tokyo Bay. Passing under Rainbow Bridge, we arrive at Takeshiba Pier. Please enjoy this brief but memorable sea voyage.

Visiting Workshops of Ki-Hachijo, One of Japan’s Three Great Pongee Silks
One of Hachijojima’s representative traditional crafts is Ki-Hachijo, one of Japan’s three great pongee silks. This silk textile features three primary colours—yellow, birch, and black—dyed using natural plant materials indigenous to Hachijojima. Since island weavers still work from individual homes, witnessing the production process is rarely possible. We visit a workshop that reveals this precious craft, showcasing the excellence of Hachijojima’s enduring traditional artistry.

Mount Mihara and Mount Hachijo-Fuji: 2 Nights on Nature-Rich Hachijojima
Located approximately 300 kilometres due south of Tokyo, this unspoilt island overflows with lush natural beauty and tropical atmosphere despite its proximity to the metropolitan area. Major attractions include the stone-walled townscape remaining in the Osato district and workshops for “Ki-Hachijo,” one of Japan’s three great pongee silks, offering encounters with the island’s authentic culture and history.

Spectacular Volcanic Experience Walking Trail and Other Miyakejima Attractions
In contrast to verdant Hachijojima, Miyakejima is a volcanic island. Lava flow traces from the 1940s onwards remain at several island locations, accessible for viewing via Volcanic Experience Walking Trails. Along the trail, the ruins of Ako Elementary and Junior High School, engulfed by lava flows during the 1983 eruption, remain preserved as they were. The crater and black lava plateaus, resembling lunar landscapes, convey the awesome power of nature.
