Leisurely Sojourn: Beppu Hot Springs & Kumamoto Discovery 7 Days

Meeting Point: Oita Airport

Finish Point: Kumamoto Airport

Recommended Season: All seasons

Duration: 7 days

For our “Leisurely Stay” in Kyushu, we have selected the towns of Beppu and Kumamoto, both of which are attracting considerable attention. Beppu is known as a historic hot spring resort. Even during the coronavirus pandemic, new hotels have opened one after another, and the hot spring district has seen the opening of new workshops, galleries and restaurants featuring folk crafts and other items. A museum that introduces hot springs from multiple perspectives has also been established, drawing much attention. Kumamoto, too, has seen Kumamoto Castle recover from the earthquake, and the old townscapes that spread throughout the city are being re-evaluated, with “castle town walks by city tram” coming into the spotlight. Why not take a leisurely visit to these towns, both of which serve as gateways to Kyushu tourism?

Beppu: A Retro Town Where Hot Springs and Delightful Town Walks Go Hand in Hand

Beppu, Japan’s premier hot spring town. With an overwhelming 2,291 hot spring sources currently within the city limits, one cannot help but be astonished by this remarkable number. Precisely because of this abundance, Beppu has become synonymous with hot springs, and once visitors settle into their hotels or ryokan, they may find themselves spending surprisingly little time exploring the town itself. Within Beppu city, there are primarily two districts where one can enjoy captivating town walks. One is the district that forms the heart of Beppu Onsen, and the other is the district near Beppu Station, where ancient hot springs with sand baths that remain active to this day can be found. As a historic hot spring resort, traditional crafts that visitors can appreciate are also renowned, and recently, new workshops and galleries have been increasing in number. Our tour includes town walks through the Beppu Jigoku (hells) where various hot spring sources can be observed, the Jigoku Museum, the Takegawara district, and the Kannawa district, allowing you to fully enjoy exploring Beppu on foot.

Experiencing Beppu Bay: Oita’s Pride and Spectacular Fishing Grounds

Even within nature-rich Kyushu, Oita Prefecture is particularly blessed with its coastline. The tidal flats of the Buzen Sea, Beppu Bay opening widely into the Seto Inland Sea, and the Bungo Channel with its distinctive rias coastline create a varied topography that forms ideal fishing grounds, where diverse marine products are landed throughout the year. On this journey, we visit Oga Fishing Port, which faces Beppu Bay. In the early morning, we board a fishing boat from Toyooka Port, located close to our hotel, and enjoy a cruise across Beppu Bay sparkling in the morning sun as we make our way to Oga Fishing Port. Here, a rare morning market is held where members of the general public can purchase fresh fish. We explore the lively morning market alongside local fishermen, listening to stories unique to the locality. The fishing port breakfast is also something to look forward to.

Kumamoto: A City Where Town Exploration is as Delightful as Kumamoto Castle Itself

When it comes to Kumamoto tourism, the National Treasure Kumamoto Castle and Suizenji Garden are well known, but what is surprisingly little recognised is that “castle town exploration by tram” offers tremendous appeal. Furumachi, Shinmachi, Kyomachi, and Teramachi are all brimming with charm. The city centre retains numerous old machiya townhouses and historic sites, and exploring the town by tram with local guides represents another facet of Kumamoto’s allure. One such area, Kyomachi, located on the northern side of Kumamoto Castle, offers delightful retro town walks where visitors can explore Natsume Soseki’s former residence and the brick-built Kumamoto Court, amongst other attractions.

Shimabara: Castle Town of a Christian Daimyo with Preserved Samurai Residences

One day during your stay in Kumamoto, we take a ferry to visit Shimabara, a castle town on the Shimabara Peninsula that was also a Christian stronghold. We shall visit Shimabara Castle’s Christian Historical Museum, the ruins of samurai residences, and Shimabara Catholic Church with its magnificent stained glass windows.

Exploring the Historic Sites of Kitsuki: Castle Town of the Kunisaki Peninsula

Kitsuki, the castle town of the Matsudaira clan, flourished as the political and economic centre of the Kunisaki Peninsula. It is Japan’s only sandwich-style castle town, featuring two samurai residential districts built on elevated ground, a merchant quarter spread across the valley between them, and Kitsuki Castle standing at the centre. It remains an atmospheric town where one can almost hear the sounds of daily life from the Edo period.
